Sarah, you can use the outside facing technique to finish the Lazy Days skirt, too. It adds great contrast, doesn't it? Thanks for commenting, and your little Easter dress is darling.

I love this technique, because it is so difficult to get an eased hem to lay totally flat without any puckering. Just wanted to mention that I made a dress a couple of years ago where the hem facing was sewn to the OUTSIDE of the dress, making it a contrasting band around the bottom of the dress. http://www.aureliamarie.com/2009/04/easter-sunday.html
The technique is just the same, only flipped to the outside rather than inside. Such great attention to detail in your patterns!

Mary Anne, you might get a better response if you post this question to the discussion forums section of the website.

Our hem facings are pattern pieces provided in the pattern envelope, and they're cut from fabric. A ribbon would not have the same contour shape as the hem or the hem facing, so it would not give the same result as you see in this example.

Do you use a ribbon or a piece of fabric (cut on size)?

This is such an elegant solution to so many problems. I don't mind easing hems, my issue was the problem of 4-fabric intersections clumps at the hem.
