introducing modern workshop, for moda

I’m very pleased to introduce Modern Workshop, the second Oliver + S fabric collection for Moda.

Modern Workshop, by Oliver + S for Moda

Modern Workshop takes its inspiration from the Wiener Werkstatte. Based in Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, this circle of artists and craftspeople reacted against the industrial revolution’s mass production of homewares by creating unique, beautiful objects that are noted today for their enduring quality and their sophisticated design sensibility.

The collection includes 32 prints in both floral and geometric motifs that make use of a fresh, twenty-first-century color palette. The collection includes both small scale and large scale prints which makes it ideal for either garment sewing or quilting.

Modern Workshop pre-cuts are shipping to stores now. Yardage will be available in your local independent fabric store toward the end of April. We’ll be showing much more of the collection over the next few weeks, but I thought you might be interested in having a little sneak peek at the prints and colorways.

Modern Workshop includes quilting cottons that have the same wonderful hand as City Weekend, luxurious interlock knits, and new PU-coated laminates that meet CPSIA standards for use in children’s clothing. I hope you’ll enjoy sewing with it!

I like it. For me, the third group comes closest in spirit to the Wiener Werkstätte, especially the prints with the brown background.

Love it (already!)
I’ve been stashing on CW fabric for my spring/summer sewing (already on the go) and probably will save this collection for fall sewing (this way, I have enough stash/planning time). The bolder hues used in this collection will be perfect for a new quilt.

I absolutely love it! Inspiried by my very favorite period in history and the subject of all my grad school research. I’m also glad to hear they’ll be a soft and special as the City Weekend cottons.

Just to fill you in I have blogged about your bubble dress. I love, love that pattern and it was a dream to sew. I do hope one day you could make it in bigger sizes. I had so many compliments. Keep up the good work!!!

I’m presently working with Modern Workshop on a quilt, and I’m curious… is the fabric lighter than other quilting cottons? It feels almost like it’s about shirting weight?

Super soft and lovely, I love it!

Modern Workshop is a special cotton fabrication that gives it a lighter, softer, and silkier hand than some other quilting cottons. It’s just the way the fabric is manufactured. But it does have a really specially feel, doesn’t it?
