Thanks for catching that! You're right; there was an error in the files that I had uploaded.

I've replaced them with the correct versions now. The chest measurements will look better to you now.

Thanks for posting the yardage requirements for your new spring patterns (3/13/10 post). Can you explain where to measure the child's chest for the Music Class Blouse? These are much smaller #s than the chest measurement for your other patterns.

...love all your patterns and am anxious to try all the new ones! Thanks so much for increasing the size range!

Hmm I'd have to say the Birthday Party dress, as a gift for sure. There is something absolutely polished about it without being fussy - the lovely regular pleats all tied in with the front tab. The ice cream definitely has a lovely zen quality which I actually probably prefer for myself... but as a gift the Birthday Party dress has star power!

Okay, after studying the pattern and racking my brain some more, I think I know what the issue is. I suspect that you don't gather the front panels differently, but you do attach them differently. I'm guessing that, whereas you attach the back yoke between the dots on the back panel that you marked for your gathering (with the panel extending beyond the edges of the yoke), you need to attach the front yoke with the edges of the yokes even with the edges of the panels. I'll give it a try and see. The rest of the pattern is so clear and well-written, it's like taking a sewing class, but for some reason I got really bogged down with this step.

Hi Roslyn, thanks for responding -- I marked the fabric exactly according to the pattern, and for the appropriate size. The instructions for this step are a little vague, as they give directions for attaching the back panel to the back yoke, which works out fine, and then they just say "repeat steps 1-3 to attach front panels to front yokes." There aren't any specific instructions or illustrations for attaching the front panels, so I had no reason to believe that I needed to do anything different with the front, but it's just not coming out right when I follow the same process that I did for the back.

I'm in the middle of making the Sunday Brunch jacket, and I've encountered a problem with gathering and attaching the front panels of the jacket. The directions state that the panel should be gathered only between the dots at the top of the panel, but after doing that, I found that the panel is overhanging the yoke by about an inch and a half in the front, and the front facings won't fit. Based on the directions, I assume the panel and yoke should line up as a continuous straight edge in order to attach the facings, but in order to achieve that, I would need to gather more of the panel than the directions indicate. I'm afraid to gather the whole panel and then find out that the sleeves won't fit, can you please advise? Thanks.

You know I sew mainly for my three boys, but this kind of dress always gets my heartstrings. A round collared, puff sleeve party dress in velvet for winter holidays or silk, etc for spring ones. A chance to use beautiful ribbons for waistband... A full skirt with a petticoat or crinoline underneath. A dress my grandmother wore, a dress my mother wore, a dress I wore. Classic.

You are the tease, aren't you.... a tailored dress? Really? OH, Liesl. ;)

As far as party dresses go, I get a lot of inspiration from vintage pattern envelopes. I made SweetPea a coatdress for Christmas this last year:

But, I would really enjoy a dress that has a riding flair to it.... I'm sure there is a technical term for this, but it has a tab or pleat/tuck at the high back?

I also like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=130057951950

And this one has sweet lines, too (I like view 3 without the hearts) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=360230041526

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=370019731673

If I can find the style of dress with that 'riding' tuck, I'll link back.

Ok, here's another question for you all: We're in the middle of fall development, and I want to do two dress patterns this season. We have already designed a really beautiful tailored dress that I can hardly wait to show you, and now I think we should do a party dress--something that would be great for Christmas/holiday as well as Easter/spring. But you know I'm not really the frilly dress type. Any suggestions? Something you've really been wanting to make along these lines that would fit with the Oliver + S aesthetic? I'm open to suggestions here (again) and would love to hear your thoughts, see sketches if you want to email them to me, etc. I think I have some direction, but it's always fun to hear from you about these areas.

I'm no help because my favorite pattern is always the one I just finished writing (after taking a little while to recover from the experience, that is). But I must agree with April that the Tea Party is fun to make and allows for lots of creative expression in terms of the fabrics you choose, the trims you select, etc.

As mom to a boy, I've been swooning over the Oliver + S dresses for awhile now. My chance to sew a dress has finally arrived in the form of a gift for a friend (actually two dresses since she has twin girls turning one this summer). The problem is: I can't decide which dress to sew! They are all so cute and the new Ice Cream Dress is really tempting. What do you moms of girls recommend? What is your favorite?

I like the 3/8" wide Clover binding tool the most. It's sold as the 3/4" wide, I think, but once you've double folded it, the binding finishes at 3/8" wide. I sometimes use 1/4" and sometimes 1/2" but seem to gravitate to 3/8" the most. And it is sort of fun, isn't it?

I think you're talking about a gusset, which would be a radically different pattern, actually. I would suggest either making a larger size or lengthening the pattern. It will be much easier and less of a headache. Try measuring your child's hips with the diaper on and compare that to the finished measurement chart (or the body measurement chart, too) to help you select the right size. Then lengthen or shorten as needed.

You could make a muslin or just use some inexpensive fabric the first time so you don't worry about ruining your favorite print. I think it should be fun.

Making it longer according to Liesl's instructions makes sense for the playsuit. It seems like some baby pants have some sort of panel between the legs (now talking about modifying the pj's).

Hello= I made at least three of the playsuits (see flickr for mine) for my cloth diaper boy last year ( we use fuzzi bunz) and it was never a problem. I guess I would whip a "muslin" or sample out of fabric you aren't attached to and just try it out. For us, it always seemed like length of the garment is more of an issue then the width with cloth diapers, so maybe adding length as Liesl outlined in her recent blog post, below the yoke the pattern pieces are quite straight and it shouldn't be too hard. I did think the suit was pretty slim fitting compared to ready to wear suits so sizing one size up may work too, or making it out of a firm knit fabric rather than a woven.....just my ideas- Katja

Hi there, I found a link to your fantastic web/store last week and very glad that i did. I've just spent the last couple of days practising my sewing skills (brand new self teaching begginer)- making your Lazy day skirt for my daughter (5) and just bought one of your patterns (sail boat) to make for my son (6months). I just love your designs for kids and the fact that they are simple to follow with easy instructions. Cant wait to see more of them! This is probably too late but maybe for the next release- I'd really love to see more patterns for boys and some of the girls patterns in larger sizes :) :)
Thanks for sharing your designs with us and keep up the great work!! Looking forward to making some awesome clothes for my kids. wish me luck ;p

I have to admit that I find pressing strips of bias binding strangely satisfying! I have burnt my fingers a few times though and now that I am fully bitten by the sewing bug I'm thinking that maybe I'd look into these tools. I'm just wondering whether other people use them and what sizes to get for O and S patterns?
Many thanks!

How do I make them? Other than making a huge pant size and then shortening the legs how do I do this? A panel of some sort? I know this will result in me chopping up a bunch of muslin for testing BUT if I could have a bit of a nudge in the right direction? How would this work for the Tea Party playsuit?
