Oliver + S Wholesale Customer Newsletter

August, 2010, Vol. 23

I'm so pleased to announce our new Fall 2010 patterns! The patterns will begin shipping on September 1 to retailers who place pre-orders. (You may download a wholesale pre-order form from our website.) Patterns should be shipping through our distributors by mid-September. The official release date for consumers is Tuesday, September 7.

This season, we are releasing four new patterns: two dresses, one skirt and top (with a dress option), and one unisex top and pants outfit. Two of the patterns include items designed especially for knits, including those in our own City Weekend collection from Moda which will be arriving in stores to coincide with release of the patterns.

As with last season's releases, the items this season feature our expanded size ranges. The smaller package includes sizes 6M - 4, and the larger includes sizes 5 - 12.

Our newsletter this month provides you with a first view of the four new styles. All this month on the Oliver + S blog we will be publishing posts that go into detail (with many more photos) on the different views and options available with each pattern. Be sure to check back often to see what we've prepared for you and your customers!

Cheers,

Liesl

School Photo Dress

This stylish, lined, above-the-knee-length, A-line dress features a hidden, on-seam, front kangaroo pocket and an invisible back zipper.

Depending on the fabric selection, the dress can be appropriate either for everyday school wear or it can be dressed up (using a silk dupioni, perhaps) for a special occasion such as a wedding or a holiday.

View A of the dress has a stand-away, roll collar and 3/4-length cuffed sleeves.

View B (shown here) includes a cute, feminine ruffle collar and gathered, bias-bound, 3/4-length sleeves. Of course, you can mix and match elements from the two views to create a number of additional styles.

For this pattern, we are suggesting the use of light- to medium-weight non-stretch fabrics (such as quilting cotton, broadcloth, lawn, poplin, or fine-wale corduroy), silk taffeta or dupioni, linen, and wool suiting or crepe.

This pattern is rated three of four scissors in difficulty. It's a more time-consuming and challenging pattern that gives very impressive results for customers who have a little sewing experience. But, as with all our patterns, this one is very achievable because we break the construction down with clear step-by-step instructions. We think your customers will love it!

Hopscotch Skirt, Knit Top + Dress

This pattern includes a gathered skirt and a pullover, gathered-front knit top or dress.

The skirt (designed for woven fabrics) features an elastic-back waistband, front button placket, and an interesting pleated pocket detail inspired by a Chinese takeout container.

The pullover top or dress is designed to be sewn with knit fabrics. It includes both long- and short-sleeve options and is as comfortable to wear as it is cute to look at.

The top or dress can be made from an interlock, jersey, textured knit, lightweight double knit, or matte jersey. (The knit fabric should have at least 25% stretch.) For the skirt we recommend a light- to medium-weight woven fabric such as quilting cotton, broadcloth, shirting, poplin, fine-wale corduroy, twill, denim, chambray, or linen.

This pattern is easier to sew and is rated as two of four scissors in difficulty. It's a great project to experiment with knit sewing. (During August, we'll have a post on the Oliver + S blog providing some tips for sewing with knits.)

Music Box Jumper

The Music Box Jumper is one of the easiest patterns we have written. It has been designed especially for new seamstresses who are looking to build their skills with a sewing machine or to complete their first  sewing project from a pattern. As such, it would make a great project to use for an introduction to garment sewing class in your shop.

This empire-waist jumper can be worn alone or layered over a blouse or shirt in cooler weather.

View A (shown here) presents a softly pleated, mid-calf-length skirt.

View B gives an A-line skirt with a single, inverted box pleat at center front and a decorative button tab detail. Both views button or snap up the back.

For this dress, we recommend lightweight fabrics like quilting cotton; cotton chambray, fine twill, shirting, and fine-wale corduroy; and light- to medium-weight linen.

The pattern is rated one of four scissors in difficulty.

Nature Walk Pullover + Knit Pants

This unisex top and pants pattern includes an easy-to-sew pullover top in a color-blocked design. The pants are pull-on with a hidden elastic waist.

The top can be made in lightweight fabrics for a casual shirt or in heavier fabrics for use as a layering piece in place of a sweatshirt or jacket.

The pants pattern, inspired by a classic yoga pant, is intended for knits. It's a very versatile piece, and we think it's going to become a favorite in many kids' wardrobe because of the style and the comfort it provides when made in a soft knit. It even makes a great pajama bottom.

For the pullover, we recommend light- to medium-weight woven fabrics like quilting cotton, broadcloth, poplin, shirting, corduroy, denim; and stretch fabrics like interlock, fleece, and microfleece. The pants can be made from any knit with at least 25% stretch. Interlock, jersey, textured knits, lightweight double knits, and matte jersey are all appropriate.

Like the new Hopscotch pattern, this item is rated two of four scissors in difficulty.

Be sure to submit your pre-order for priority shipping before the new styles' official release date, and check the Oliver + S blog all month for more detail on these patterns.

If you are an on-line retailer and need high-resolution images of the pattern fronts and backs for your website, you may download them here.

We have a five-item trunk show featuring these items and the City Weekend fabric line that is touring North America this season. The show has a few open dates in October, November, and December. Contact the studio if you would like to schedule it into your shop.
