popover doll dress: free downloadable pattern

At this time last year, we released our Popover Sundress sewing pattern as a free download.

Shortly after that, S asked me to make a Popover Sundress for her favorite doll, Samantha, to match a dress that she was wearing at the time. I scaled the pattern down to fit an 18 inch doll, made Samantha’s dress, and promptly forgot about the doll-sized pattern.

Last week I was going through some files and came across the pattern again. We thought there might be other little girls who would enjoy having a matching Popover Sundress for their favorite doll, so we’re making the pattern available as a free download.

Like the original sewing pattern, this is a simple and quick item to sew. It uses the same construction method as the full-sized dress, so you’ll also need to download the instructions for that version in order to sew the doll dress.

Finding this pattern reminded me that I’ve made a few other Oliver + S styles in 18 inch doll size for S over the years. If there’s enough interest, we’ll make some of those patterns available as free downloads in the future.

Add me to the list of people who love this! I tried resizing the Ice Cream Dress for my daughter’s doll a few weeks ago (link here http://bybido.blogspot.com/2010/07/doll-for-my-oldest.html ), but I know it’s not to scale. I would love to have the true doll-sized version of this and other outfits!

How neat! I just had a look at the fabulous Ice Cream Social doll’s dress over at Bybido and I’m sure my daughter would love doll’s clothes that match some of you patterns I’ve already made. She’s getting an American Girl doll from her aunt and uncle for her birthday next week and I think matching outfits would clinch the deal :) So yes please please please on more doll’s clothes patterns!

Thank you for this! I have a daughter who also loves to dress like her American Girl doll.. we have Kit.. I have tried to make my own versions of the sailboat skirt, birthday party dress and the puppet show dress… at her behest the outfits always represent the style, and fabric that I used for her dress, but never the great fit, and finishing that you work into your patterns. I would lovE loVE LOVE to have 18 inch doll patterns included, or even a dolly’s wardrobe pattern collection to purchase separately.

The doll clothes idea is fabulous. I’m doing just this for my miss 8 who wants to learn to sew. Only trouble is her doll is 20 inches not 18 inches so the patterns have to be scaled up further. Great way to teach the basics to girls who are ready to start.

Thank you for this pattern. It is so adorable for the doll. I used scrap fabric I had already to make the first one and I can’t wait to go out and get some fabric to make matching dresses for my girl and her doll! Thanks!

If you see this I have one question. My printer wanted to shrink the scale of the page when it printed. So I’m not sure if I have the right scale for the pattern. I was wondering if you can you tell me how long the straps should be so I can see if I’m doing things right or not. TIA :)
